The Moriori settle the Chatham Islands
Polynesians settle the Chathams and renounce war
Around 1500 descendants of the first Māori moved to the harsh Chatham Islands, 800 km from New Zealand. There they became the Moriori; by their tradition the chief Nunuku-whenua forbade killing, and disputes were settled by fights to first blood. In 1835 Māori from the North Island invaded and enslaved the Moriori.
