Umayyad Mosque
Al-Walid builds the capital's great mosque on a church site

In 705–715 Caliph al-Walid I built the Great Mosque of Damascus on the site of the basilica of John the Baptist. Its mosaics of gardens and palaces follow the Byzantine tradition, and the mosque became a model for many others across the Islamic world.
