The sinking of the Vasa
Sweden's mighty warship sinks less than a mile out

On 10 August 1628 Gustavus Adolphus's newest warship set off on her maiden voyage, keeled over in a gust after about 1,300 metres and sank in the harbour. Raised almost intact in 1961, the Vasa now fills one of Scandinavia's most visited museums.
