Nzinga becomes Queen of Ndongo
For forty years she outfought and outwitted the Portuguese

In 1622 Nzinga negotiated with the Portuguese governor in Luanda; legend says that when no chair was offered, a servant knelt to become her seat. In 1624 Nzinga became ruler of Ndongo. Driven out by the Portuguese, she conquered the kingdom of Matamba, allied with the Dutch and fought on almost until her death in 1663. Today she is a national heroine of Angola.
