Great Surgun: deportation of Armenians to Persia
Shah Abbas I empties the Ararat plain, deporting Armenians
Retreating before the Ottomans in 1604–1605, Shah Abbas I used scorched-earth tactics and forcibly deported the population of Eastern Armenia to Iran, an estimated 250,000–300,000 people; many drowned crossing the Aras. The merchants of Julfa were resettled near Isfahan, in New Julfa.
