Apology to the Stolen Generations
Australia formally apologises for taking Aboriginal children
On 13 February 2008 Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised on behalf of Parliament to the Stolen Generations — Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children removed from their families by authorities from the early 20th century into the 1970s. A 1997 report found that between one in ten and one in three Indigenous children had been taken. The previous government of John Howard had refused to apologise.
