Austronesian settlement of Madagascar
Seafarers from Indonesia crossed the whole Indian Ocean
Malagasy is most closely related to Ma'anyan of south-eastern Borneo, and the Malagasy people's ancestry comes in roughly equal parts from Southeast Asia and East Africa. Estimates place the Austronesian settlement between the 5th and 8th centuries, though the first human traces on the island may be much older. Madagascar marks the western end of an Austronesian expansion that reached as far as Easter Island.
