Rise of Tiwanaku
A city by Lake Titicaca nearly four kilometres up

By the mid-first millennium, Tiwanaku, at about 3,800 metres, had become the centre of a state whose influence reached from Peru to northern Chile. Its builders raised the Akapana stepped pyramid and the famous Gate of the Sun, carved from a single block of stone. Raised-field farming yielded harvests even at altitude. Around 1000 the city declined, by various estimates because of a long drought.
