Completion of the Babylonian Talmud
Judaism's central text after the Bible took shape in Iraq
For centuries, generations of sages in the Jewish academies of Sura and Pumbedita, under Sasanian rule, debated and commented on the Mishnah. By tradition, Rav Ashi and Ravina completed the work around 500. The Babylonian Talmud runs to thousands of pages of debate on law, ritual and ethics, and remains the basis of Jewish religious study.
