Battle of Bapheus
Osman's first victory over the Byzantines

On 27 July 1302 Osman's small beylik defeated a Byzantine force near Nicomedia. The victory drew ghazi warriors to Osman from all over Anatolia, and Turkish tradition dates the birth of the Ottoman state from it.
