Battle of Covadonga
Pelagius beats the Moors in Asturias: the Reconquista begins

Around 722, in the mountains of Asturias, a band led by the Visigothic noble Pelagius defeated a Muslim force at the cave of Covadonga. The victory secured the independent Kingdom of Asturias, and Spanish tradition counts it as the start of the Reconquista.
