Battle of Gangut
The Russian navy's first major victory

On 7 August 1714 Russian galleys under Peter I and Fyodor Apraksin slipped past becalmed Swedish warships off the Hanko peninsula and captured Rear Admiral Ehrensköld's squadron. The victory opened the Gulf of Bothnia and the Åland Islands to the Russian navy.
