Battle of Talikota
One battle, and the splendid city of Vijayanagara lies in ruins
In January 1565 a coalition of the Deccan sultanates crushed the army of the Vijayanagara Empire, the last great Hindu power of southern India. The regent Rama Raya was captured and beheaded. For months the victors looted and burned the capital, one of the largest cities in the world at the time; its ruins at Hampi are now a UNESCO site.
