Battle of the Golden Spurs
Flemish militia crush the French knights

On 11 July 1302 the foot militias of the Flemish towns, armed with pikes and goedendags, routed Philip IV's army of knights at Kortrijk. Hundreds of gilded spurs taken from the dead were hung in a church, which gave the battle its name.
