The Bosporan Kingdom
Greek cities on the Kerch Strait feed Athens with grain
The Greek colonies on both sides of the Kerch Strait united around Panticapaeum; in 438 BC power there passed to the Spartocid dynasty. The Bosporus shipped grain, fish and slaves to Athens, while Scythian and Maeotian nobles bought Greek gold and wine. The kingdom outlived the Hellenistic age and remained a Roman ally until the 4th century AD.
