China becomes the workshop of the world

On 11 December 2001, after 15 years of talks, China joined the World Trade Organization. Lower tariffs and secure access to world markets fuelled a boom: exports grew more than fivefold from 2001 to 2008, and in 2009 China became the world's largest exporter. The flood of cheap goods hit manufacturing jobs in the US and Europe.
