Dar al-Fonun, Iran's first modern college
Reformer Amir Kabir builds a college but falls before it opens

Iran's first European-style college was the idea of the grand vizier Amir Kabir; European teachers taught medicine, engineering and military science there. It opened in late 1851, by which time Amir Kabir had been dismissed, and in January 1852 he was killed on the Shah's orders.
