The Great Trek
Thousands of Boers head inland in ox wagons

From 1835, resenting British rule and the abolition of slavery, some 12,000–15,000 Dutch-speaking Boer settlers left the Cape Colony in ox wagons. They pushed into Ndebele and Zulu lands; in 1838 at Blood River they repelled a Zulu army. The trekkers founded the republics of Natalia, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, the seedbed of later Afrikaner nationalism.
