From 1817 troops under General Aleksey Yermolov began the systematic conquest of Chechnya, Dagestan and Circassia, building forts (Groznaya in 1818), clearing forests and burning rebellious villages. The highlanders resisted for almost 50 years; the war ended in 1864 with the expulsion of most Circassians.
