On 23 May 1844 the young merchant Sayyid ʻAlí Muhammad declared himself the Báb, the “Gate” to the hidden imam. His movement spread fast across Iran and was harshly suppressed; the Báb himself was executed by firing squad in Tabriz in 1850. His follower Baháʼu'lláh, in Baghdad in 1863, founded a new religion — the Baháʼí Faith.
