The Great Exhibition and the first public toilets
827,000 visitors pay a penny for the first public flush toilet

At the 1851 Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, George Jennings installed the first modern public flush toilets. 827,280 visitors paid a penny each to use them, which is why the British still say 'spend a penny' for going to the loo.
