Gur-e-Amir, Timur's tomb
A tomb opened three days before war — hence the curse legend

The ribbed turquoise dome was built for Timur's grandson, but in 1405 the conqueror himself was laid here under a slab of dark green jade. Soviet scientists opened the crypt on 19 June 1941, giving rise to a curse legend, and Mikhail Gerasimov rebuilt Timur's face from his skull.
