Manco Cápac founds Cusco
Inca legend: a city founded where a golden staff sank
In Inca legend, the children of the Sun, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, rose from Lake Titicaca and founded a city where their golden staff sank into the ground. Historians think the Incas built a small kingdom at Cusco around the start of the 13th century. For almost two centuries it was one of many in the Andes, until under Pachacuti it became an empire.
