Peter I opens his cabinet of 'natural rarities' to the public

In 1714 Peter I put his 'natural and human curiosities and rarities' on show in the Summer Palace, creating Russia's first public museum. He later bought the famous Dutch collections of Ruysch and Seba, and in 1727 the museum moved into its towered building on Vasilievsky Island.
