Marwan's campaign against the Khazars
An Arab army pushes through Derbent to the Volga

In 737 the Arab general Marwan ibn Muhammad led a huge army through Derbent deep into Khazaria and reached the Volga. The khagan sued for peace and, according to Arab sources, promised to convert to Islam, but the Arabs withdrew and the Caucasus became a stable frontier between the caliphate and Khazaria.
