Mayapan, capital of Yucatán
The last great Maya capital of Yucatán

After Chichen Itza declined, the walled city of Mayapan, home to 15,000–17,000 people, became the leading city of northern Yucatán. The nobles of subject towns had to live in the capital, which was ruled by the Cocom family. In the mid-15th century it was destroyed in a revolt, and Yucatán broke into the small kingdoms the Spaniards found.
