Mongols ravage Volga Bulgaria
The first blow of Batu's western campaign
In the autumn of 1236 the armies of Batu and Subutai took and burned Bilyar and other towns of Volga Bulgaria. A year later Ryazan and Vladimir met the same fate; the Bulgar lands became part of the Ulus of Jochi, the future Golden Horde.
