Registan: Ulugh Beg's madrasa
Samarkand's 'sandy place' gets a school for stargazers

In 1420 Ulugh Beg opened a madrasa on Samarkand's main square that taught mathematics and astronomy alongside theology, reputedly with the ruler himself among the teachers. The Sher-Dor madrasa, with tigers on its portal, and the Tilya-Kori later completed the Registan.
