Yekuno Amlak founds the Solomonic dynasty
Kings claiming descent from Solomon rule until 1974
In 1270 the prince Yekuno Amlak overthrew the Zagwe dynasty, builders of the Lalibela churches, and claimed the heritage of the ancient kings of Aksum. The new dynasty traced its line to a son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, a legend set down in the epic Kebra Nagast. The Solomonids ruled Ethiopia for almost seven centuries, until Haile Selassie was deposed in 1974.
