On 7 December 1988 a magnitude 6.8 earthquake destroyed Spitak and much of Leninakan (now Gyumri) and Kirovakan (now Vanadzor). An estimated 25,000–50,000 died and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. The USSR accepted large-scale foreign aid for the first time in decades, and Gorbachev cut short a US visit.
