Protests from the south topple President Akayev in a day

After disputed parliamentary elections in spring 2005, protests broke out in Jalal-Abad and Osh, and on 24 March a crowd in Bishkek seized the government building. Askar Akayev, in power since 1990, flew to Moscow and resigned in April. Kurmanbek Bakiyev was elected president that summer.
