Barbarossa drives the Spanish from Algiers
A corsair makes Algiers the base of the Barbary pirates
From 1510 the Spanish held the Peñón fortress on an island facing Algiers and bombarded the city. In May 1529 Hayreddin Barbarossa, a vassal of the Ottoman sultan, took the fortress after three weeks of bombardment and joined the island to the shore with a mole, creating the harbour of Algiers, the capital of the Barbary corsairs.
