Bhola cyclone
History's deadliest storm, a prelude to Bangladesh's independence

On 12 November 1970 the deadliest tropical cyclone on record drove a storm surge into the Ganges delta, killing 300,000 to 500,000 people. Slow relief from West Pakistan fuelled Bengali anger, and a year later the Bangladesh Liberation War began.
