Falklands War
Argentina and Britain fight over South Atlantic islands
On 2 April 1982 troops of Argentina's military junta landed on the Falkland Islands, held by Britain since 1833. Britain sent a fleet 13,000 km south, and on 14 June the Argentine garrison at Port Stanley surrendered; about 900 people died. The defeat hastened the junta's fall.
