Jeltoqsan: December 1986 protests in Almaty
Young Kazakhs protest a party boss sent from Moscow

On 16 December 1986 Moscow replaced Kazakhstan's party leader Dinmukhamed Kunaev with Gennady Kolbin, who had never worked in the republic. Next day students and young people filled the central square; troops and police dispersed them. Officially two died, other estimates are higher; thousands were detained and dozens sentenced.
