New Zealand Wars
Wars over land that cost the Māori their best territory

In March 1845 warriors of the chief Hōne Heke felled the British flagstaff again and sacked Kororāreka. This opened wars between the colonial government and some Māori iwi; other Māori fought for the Crown. The largest was the Waikato campaign of 1863–64. Some 3,000 people died by most estimates, and confiscations stripped Māori of over a million hectares of land.
