Persian famine of 1870–1872
Two droughts in a row and grain hoarding ravage the country
The famine of 1870–1872, the best documented in Iran's history, struck almost the whole country; only a few cities such as Shahrud, Kerman and Birjand escaped it. Historians blame two successive droughts, as well as officials, landlords and grain dealers who hoarded and speculated in grain.
