Russia conquers Samarkand from Bukhara
Timur's city falls to Russia; Bukhara becomes a protectorate
In May 1868 General Konstantin von Kaufmann's troops defeated the emir of Bukhara and occupied Samarkand. Under the peace treaty Samarkand and the Zeravshan valley went to the Governorate-General of Turkestan, and the Emirate of Bukhara became a Russian dependency. When the main force left, the townspeople revolted; the painter Vasily Vereshchagin was among the citadel's defenders.
