The burial of Chief Roi Mata
A Vanuatu legend confirmed by excavation

According to tradition, around 1600 Chief Roi Mata made peace among the warring clans of central Vanuatu and on his death was buried on the islet of Artok with dozens of his followers. In 1967 the French archaeologist José Garanger excavated a mass burial of about 50 people there, matching the oral account. In 2008 Chief Roi Mata's Domain became Vanuatu's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
