Battle of Sardarapat
Armenian troops and volunteers stop the Ottomans near Yerevan
In May 1918 the Ottoman army advanced on Yerevan after the Russian front in Transcaucasia collapsed. On 22–29 May Armenian units and volunteers, including peasants and refugees, halted it at Sardarapat, while fighting raged at Bash Abaran and Karakilisa. This saved the core of the future Republic of Armenia.
