The war began in October 1859 over the borders of Spanish Ceuta. General O'Donnell's army defeated the Moroccans and took Tetouan in February 1860; under the Treaty of Wad-Ras the Sultan enlarged Ceuta, ceded Ifni to Spain and paid a large indemnity.
