Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests
India and Pakistan go openly nuclear
On 11 and 13 May 1998 India carried out five underground nuclear tests at Pokhran in the Thar Desert. Two weeks later, on 28 and 30 May, Pakistan responded with tests in the Chagai Hills of Balochistan. The US and others imposed sanctions, but both countries have since openly maintained nuclear arsenals, and every crisis between them alarms the world.
