Kangxi Dictionary
47,000 characters: the classic Chinese dictionary

On the Kangxi Emperor's orders scholars compiled in six years a dictionary of 47,035 characters arranged under 214 radicals. The radical system became standard and is still used to look up characters, and the dictionary remained the chief reference for Chinese writing into the 20th century.
