In spring 1873 Russian troops advanced on Khiva in four columns across the Kyzylkum and Karakum; in May the khan surrendered. Khiva became a protectorate, ceded the right bank of the Amu Darya and abolished the slave trade; a punitive expedition against the Yomud Turkmens followed. In 1876, after crushing a revolt, Russia also abolished the Khanate of Kokand.
