The Mutapa Empire
Heir to Great Zimbabwe, trading gold with Swahili and Portuguese
By tradition, around 1430 Nyatsimba Mutota of the Great Zimbabwe state moved north and subdued the Zambezi valley. His title, mwene mutapa, 'lord of the conquered lands', became 'Monomotapa' in European mouths. The state traded gold and ivory with the Swahili towns and, from the 16th century, with the Portuguese.
