Purchase of Manhattan
An island bought from the Lenape for 60 guilders' worth of goods

In 1626 Peter Minuit, director of the colony of New Netherland, bought the island of Manhattan from the Lenape for goods worth 60 guilders. New Amsterdam grew up at the island's southern tip; the English seized it in 1664 and renamed it New York.
