Satsuma Rebellion
The samurai's last stand against a conscript army
In 1877 the samurai of former Satsuma domain, led by Saigō Takamori, a hero of the Meiji Restoration, rose against the government that had stripped them of their privileges. The new army of peasant conscripts crushed the revolt within months, and Saigō died in the last battle near Kagoshima.
