The Principality of Sealand
A retired major declares a sea fort his own country
In 1967 Paddy Roy Bates ousted a pirate radio station from an abandoned British wartime sea fort 11 km off the coast and declared it the Principality of Sealand. No country recognises the micronation, but it has a flag, an anthem, a currency, passports and a 'princely' family.
