Biton Coulibaly founds the Ségou Empire
The Bambara build an empire on the middle Niger
Around 1712 the Bambara leader Mamari (Biton) Coulibaly turned a young hunters' association into a standing army and founded a state with its capital at Ségou on the Niger. The Ségou Empire dominated the middle Niger for over a century until Umar Tall conquered it in 1861.
