Capture of Tashkent
General Chernyayev storms Tashkent without orders
In June 1865 General Mikhail Chernyayev, ignoring cautious instructions from St Petersburg, took Tashkent from the Khanate of Kokand after a siege. The city became the centre of Russian Turkestan, and soon the Emirate of Bukhara (1868) and the Khanate of Khiva (1873) became Russian protectorates.
